Three years later, Brom sees no end to the agony of being married to the disinherited and demanding Katrina Van Tassel. In fact, he’s become so preoccupied with his own misery that he barely notices how much his spiteful prize loathes him for neglecting their relationship and six children. But a belated revelation promises to unravel a different kind of hell—young Aucker Van Acker thinks he saw Brom Bones plant the schoolteacher in the ground nearly a thousand days ago, and haunted by twisted nightmares ever since, the reluctant boy covertly unloads his conscience.
