The Story of Irving's Ghost
Inspired by the legendary imagination of Washington Irving, our mission is to resurrect the gothic spirit in modern literature. We believe that every shadow has a voice and every ghost has a story worth telling.
In June of 2026, Brian Doe published his work under the independent imprint, Irving's Ghost Publishing. His book, both digital and hardcopy, is printed by Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), a subsidiary of Amazon Books.
He made the decision to go the independent, or "indie" route because of his deep conviction that many people have wonderful stories to tell, yet big business (i.e. major publishing houses) gets to decide who reads what. This doesn't seem logical, since we're all storytellers in one way or another, whose tales are meant to be judged, enjoyed, or rejected by audiences of our peers—rational, irrational, or otherwise. Some stories could make more money than others, no doubt, but it would be a sad state of affairs if dollar signs were the only inspiration that drove an artist to create instead of the passionate, unadulterated, and profoundly personal expression of their craft.
Pie in the sky? Maybe.
Regardless, independent publishers, on the other hand, open their doors to a much wider base of authors and let nature take its course in deciding who succeeds based on reader response. Despite having been rejected for publication by traditional publishing houses, many
independent authors have found themselves on The New York Times Bestsellers List through their own grit and grind alone, rather than via corporate advertising campaigns. If you love what you do, want the world to experience it, and you're willing to do the hard work to get that to happen, you should have a forum by which to elevate your reach across the globe. Fortunately, independent publishing houses help to make this happen...for all of us.
Irving's Ghost, then, is Brian Doe's own independent brand, and one that we hope finds tremendous success in the future. Thank you for supporting our literary endeavor, even if you never buy a single copy of Brian's book.
